Under the patronage of the Youth Affairs Department at the Ministry of Sports and Youth, in partnership with the Qatar Chess Federation, and under the slogan “Our Summer for Our Youth,” the youth body at Qatar Sports Club organized a chess championship as part of empowering youth cadres and raising the level of practices and higher-order thinking participation.

Mr. Mohamed Abdul Rahim Al-Haydoos, Head of the Youth Body, pointed out that in fruitful cooperation with the Qatar Chess Federation, a three-day continuous tournament was held, resulting in outstanding outcomes from the youth cadres in the game of chess. Chess is considered one of the most famous and oldest board games, played by two players on a checkered board usually colored black and white, using pieces specific to each player, differentiated by color, which are used to attack and capture the opponent’s pieces and to defend their own. The goal of the game is to trap the opponent’s king in a position where it cannot escape, known as checkmate. The game can end in several ways: a win, a loss, or a draw, all according to fixed rules. In team competitions, a win is recorded as one point, a draw as half a point, and a loss as zero points.

Al-Haydoos also praised the efforts of the Qatar Chess Federation’s coaches, who introduced the summer program participants to the rules and methods of playing chess. Chess is governed by a set of laws and rules defined by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) to organize it, alongside a set of amateur rules applied in local competitions. The game is played on a square board divided into 64 equal squares arranged in rows and columns, alternating in color between white and black. Each player arranges their pieces on the board consisting of a king, a queen, two bishops, two knights, two rooks, and eight pawns.

At the conclusion of the tournament, the Head of the Youth Body presented the club’s shield and a certificate of appreciation to the Qatar Chess Federation. Winners of the championship were honored and awarded medals and commemorative gifts.
