Al Shamal Sports Club was founded in 1980 by a group of individuals from the Al shamal region of Qatar with limited resources. Initially, the Club operated with a simple dirt pitch and a rented administrative building. Later on, the Club used the primary school’s field from the Ministry of Education for its activities.
In the beginning, the Club only had teams in handball and football, but in 1982, it expanded to include volleyball. In the following years, the Club established teams in other sports, including table tennis, basketball, athletics, and swimming.
Since its establishment, the Club’s management has invested in numerous talented coaches and players with the goal of forming a team worthy of the Qatar Stars League. The team achieved promotion to the first division for the first time in the 1988 season. In 2002, Al Shamal made it to the first division for the second time and, in 2014, through hard work, determination, and support from its leadership, the Club was promoted to the first league once again.
During the 2020-2021 season, under the new Club management, the team had an exceptional season, winning the second division league and securing a place in the Qatar Stars League.
In the current 2021-2022 season, thanks to the development plan implemented by the management for the football sector, the team has had an outstanding season, ensuring its position among the top teams for the next season, 2022-2023.
The Club has won the second division league four times (1988, 2002, 2014, 2021) and the Sheikh Jassim Cup in the 1996-1997 season. Additionally, the men’s basketball team won the league championship for two consecutive seasons (2018-2019/2019-2020) and finished as the league runner-up and Prince Cup runner-up in the 2020-2021 season.
The handball team achieved the Arab Clubs Champions Cup for the 15th time and won the Super Cup in the 2020-2021 season.
The stadium can accommodate approximately 5,000 spectators, and its design resembles the historical Zubarra Castle.
